Exadata Database Machine Overview X8-2:
Exadata features a modern cloud-based architecture with scale-out high-performance database servers, scale-out intelligent storage servers with state-of-the-art PCI flash, and an ultra-fast InfiniBand internal fabric that connects all servers and storage. Unique software algorithms in Exadata implement database intelligence in storage, compute, and InfiniBand networking to deliver higher performance and capacity at lower costs than other platforms. Exadata runs all types of database workloads including Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), Data Warehousing (DW), In-Memory Analytics as well as consolidation of mixed workloads. Simple and fast to implement, the Exadata Database Machine powers and protects your most important databases. Exadata can be purchased and deployed on premises as the ideal foundation for a private database cloud, or can be acquired using a subscription model and deployed in the Oracle Public Cloud or Cloud at Customer with all infrastructure management performed by Oracle.
Exadata X8-2 Features:
Up to 912 CPU cores and 28.5TB memory per rack for database processing
Up to 576 CPU cores per rack dedicated to SQL processing in storage
From 2 to 19 Database Servers per rack
From 3 to 18 Storage Servers per rack
Up to 920 TB of Flash capacity (raw) per rack
Up to 3.0 PB of disk capacity (raw) per rack
Hybrid Columnar Compression often delivers 10X-15X compression ratios
40 Gb/second (QDR) InfiniBand Network
Complete redundancy for high availability
Exadata X8-2 Benefits:
Pre-configured, pre-tested system optimized for all database applications
Uncompressed I/O bandwidth of up to 560 GB/second per full rack from SQL
Ability to perform up to 4.8M 8K database read I/O operations, or 4.3M 8K flash write I/O operations per second per full rack
Easily add compute or storage servers to meet the needs of any size application
Scale by connecting multiple Exadata Database Machine X8-2 racks or Exadata Storage Expansion Racks. Up to 18 racks can be connected by simply adding InfiniBand cables and internal switches. Larger configurations can be built with external InfiniBand switches
Exadata in the Cloud:
The investment protection that Oracle has ensured through multiple Exadata generations on-premises, has continued with Oracle Database Exadata Cloud Service, and with Oracle Database Exadata Cloud at Customer.
With Exadata Cloud Service, customers can now run Oracle databases in the cloud on Exadata, with the same extreme performance and availability experienced by thousands of organizations deploying Exadata on-premises. Exadata Cloud Service combines the world’s #1 database – Oracle, and the most powerful database platform – Exadata, with all the simplicity and operational flexibility of the public cloud. Oracle databases deployed in the cloud as part of this service include all Oracle Database options and features – such as Oracle Multitenant, In-Memory Database, Real Application Clusters (RAC), Active Data Guard, Partitioning, Advanced Compression, Advanced Security, etc. It also includes all Oracle Enterprise Manager packs.
The underlying design principle of Exadata Cloud Service is that Oracle databases deployed in this Cloud Service are 100% compatible with those deployed on-premises. This means that customers’ applications and data models do not have to change, ensuring a smooth transition to the cloud, and an efficient hybrid cloud strategy. They also do not have to invest in multiple cloud platforms for multiple workloads since Exadata provides a unified platform for all workloads – analytics, data warehousing, OLTP, consolidation, in-memory and mixed-workloads.
Exadata Cloud at Customer takes this investment protection one step further by enabling a cloud-based Oracle Database subscription service available on Oracle Exadata, with all Database options and features, but deployed in the customer data center behind their firewall. Customers enjoy the benefits of agile cloud-based provisioning, while the associated Exadata infrastructure is maintained by Oracle.
